Want to Study Law with Guest Ahia John Uy

What is the course you are currently taking?

I am currently taking a juris doctor program in ALS (Ateneo Law School).

What made you choose this course over other courses?

I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer.

How was your major different from your expectations?

It’s much more challenging than I imagined. It takes a lot of sacrifice and commitment.

What do you wish you knew before applying to this course?

I wish I knew the skills necessary to succeed in law school (practical skills necessary to be a top student).

What is the best and worst thing about your course?

Best thing: you can feel yourself improve every single day, and you understand Philippine society more and more as the program continues.

Worst: The grind. Law school will be your life and many cannot handle that pressure.

What skills from high school did you need to apply the most for this course?

My experience in debate and writing really helped.

What extracurricular activities should students think about joining if they plan to take up this course?

Any sort of clubs/orgs that teach students how to articulate both in the written and oral form will help in law school. I can see theatre orgs help as well, having confidence is a big upside when you have your recitations.

What advice would you give for students planning to take your course?

Think about it carefully. Law school is difficult, it is most likely the most challenging post graduate degree out there and it’s expensive. Get to know lawyers and law students so you can get a feel for it yourself and be ready to commit to your studies.
